What to look for in used farm & ag equipment
- Tractor hours, PTO horsepower, and whether it has the loader, cab, four-wheel drive and remotes you need.
- Engine and hydraulics: cold start, smoke, blowby, and leaks at the loader and three-point cylinders.
- Three-point category and PTO speed, so your implements fit the tractor.
- Tires: tread, sidewall cracks, and whether they are loaded with fluid.
- On balers and hay tools: knotters or net wrap, belts, bearings and pickup teeth.
- Service records and the serial plate, and on newer tractors a working emissions system.

What used farm & ag equipment sell for

Row-crop tractors and combines run well into six figures. Implements such as rotary cutters, box blades and hay rakes usually list from the hundreds to a few thousand.
Questions buyers ask
- How many hours is a lot on a used tractor?
- Well-kept diesel utility tractors often run past 8,000 hours, so service history and storage matter more than the number. Ask what work it did; heavy loader and PTO work wears a tractor harder than mowing.
- Will my implements fit this tractor?
- Check the three-point hitch category, the PTO speed and horsepower the implement needs, and the hydraulic remotes. A mismatched category needs bushings or adapters, and an undersized tractor will struggle.
- How do I check a used tractor before paying?
- Start it cold, watch for smoke and blowby, run the PTO and hydraulics under load, lift something with the loader, and look underneath for leaks and welds. Drive it through every gear.
- Can I finance farm equipment from a private seller?
- Many ag lenders and equipment finance companies will fund a private purchase with a bill of sale and serial number. Get approved before you go to look.
