What to look for in used cranes & rigging

  • Rated capacity and the load chart, and a current annual inspection certificate.
  • Boom sections, wire rope, sheaves and hook for wear and deformation.
  • Outriggers, hydraulic leaks and the load moment indicator working.
  • On boom trucks: chassis mileage, hours, and whether the PTO and crane controls all function.
  • Rigging: rated tags present, no cuts or broken wires, and shackles with legible markings.

Questions buyers ask

Do I need a certified operator?
For cranes over 2,000 lb capacity on construction sites, OSHA requires a certified and evaluated operator. Plan for that before the crane arrives.
What is a carry deck crane?
A compact, self-propelled crane with a flat deck for carrying the load, made for plants and tight sites. It is the workhorse for millwrights and industrial maintenance.
How do I inspect a used boom truck?
Ask for the last annual inspection, run the boom through full extension and rotation, set the outriggers, check the LMI, and look at the wire rope and hook closely. Then inspect the chassis like any used truck.
Can rigging be bought used?
Yes, but only with tags and no visible damage. Slings and shackles are cheap relative to what they hold up; when in doubt, buy new.
