Work trailers here come from contractors and fleets: flatbeds, equipment haulers, dump trailers, utility trailers and enclosed cargo trailers. Many are listed with the equipment they carried. Every listing is local pickup: you inspect it, run it and pay at the seller's yard.

What to look for in used trailers

  • GVWR and axle rating against what you will haul, plus your truck's tow rating.
  • Frame and welds for cracks, rust at the tongue and cross members.
  • Tires, bearings, brakes and whether the breakaway system works.
  • Deck condition, ramps or dovetail, and tie-down points.
  • Clean title in the seller's name and a VIN plate that matches.

What used trailers sell for

Used utility trailers typically list from under a thousand to a few thousand. Equipment haulers and dump trailers usually run from the low to high single-digit thousands; heavy tilt and gooseneck units go into the teens and beyond.

Questions buyers ask

Bumper pull or gooseneck?
Bumper pull works with any truck with a hitch and is easier to store. Gooseneck tows more stable, carries heavier loads and turns tighter, but needs a truck bed hitch.
How do I know a trailer's real capacity?
Subtract the empty weight from the GVWR on the VIN plate. A 14,000 lb GVWR trailer that weighs 3,000 lb carries 11,000 lb, not 14,000.
What should I check on used trailer brakes?
Plug it into your truck, set the controller and drive it. Electric brakes should grab evenly. Pull a wheel if you can and look at the shoes and magnets.
Do I need a title to register a used trailer?
In most states, yes, for anything over a few thousand pounds. Buy only from a seller who has a title in their name and check the VIN plate matches before paying.
