What to look for in used pumps & motors
- Flow and head ratings, and whether they match your suction and discharge sizes.
- Hours on engine-driven units, and whether the engine starts and holds RPM under load.
- Impeller and wear plate condition; ask if the pump has been rebuilt and with what parts.
- Seal type and any sign of leakage at the shaft.
- For electric motors: voltage, phase, frame size and a megger reading if the seller has one.

What used pumps & motors sell for
Small trash and dewatering pumps typically list in the hundreds to low thousands. Trailer-mounted diesel pumps usually run from the high single-digit thousands to the tens of thousands depending on size and hours.
Questions buyers ask
- What is a trash pump?
- A centrifugal pump built to pass solids, usually up to 2 or 3 inches, without clogging. It is the standard for construction dewatering and flood cleanup.
- How do I size a dewatering pump?
- Work out the gallons per minute you need to move and the total head (vertical lift plus friction loss in the hose). Pick a pump whose curve covers that point with margin.
- Can I run a three-phase motor on single-phase power?
- Not directly. You need a VFD or a phase converter sized to the motor. Factor that cost in before buying a three-phase unit for a single-phase shop.
- What should I check on a used submersible pump?
- Cable condition at the entry, seal and oil chamber, impeller wear, and a test run in a barrel. Ask why it was pulled from service.
