What to look for in used compressors
- CFM at your working pressure, not just horsepower. Match it to the tools you run at the same time.
- Hours and service history; on rotary screws, when the airend was last serviced and the oil changed.
- Tank inspection date on receiver tanks, and any rust weeping at the drain.
- Dryer and filtration included, and whether the shop needs dry air.
- On towables: engine hours, hose reels, tires, lights and title.

What used compressors sell for
Used reciprocating shop compressors typically list from the hundreds to a few thousand. Rotary screw units and towable diesel compressors usually run from the mid single-digit thousands to the tens of thousands depending on CFM and hours.
Questions buyers ask
- Rotary screw or reciprocating?
- Reciprocating compressors are cheaper and fine for intermittent use. Rotary screws run continuously, quieter and cooler and suit shops that use air all day. Buy on duty cycle, not price.
- How much CFM do I need?
- Add up the CFM of the tools you run at once and add about 30 percent. A typical impact wrench needs 4 to 5 CFM at 90 PSI; a sandblaster can need 50 or more.
- How do I check a used rotary screw compressor?
- Run it to pressure and listen to the airend for bearing noise, check the oil for milkiness, look at the separator and inlet filter, and confirm the controller shows no faults.
- Can I move a shop compressor myself?
- Small units fit a pickup with a forklift or ramp. Large rotary screws are several hundred to several thousand pounds and need a forklift at both ends. Plan the pickup before you pay.
