What to look for in used safety & PPE
- Manufacture and inspection dates: harnesses, lanyards and rope have service-life limits.
- Gas detectors: sensor age, calibration date and whether a docking or calibration kit is included.
- Confined space tripods and winches: load rating tags and cable condition.
- Respirators: fit-test compatibility and cartridge availability.
- Anything with a rated tag missing or illegible should be treated as unrated.

What used safety & PPE sell for
Used gas detectors typically list in the low hundreds to around a thousand. Confined space tripod and winch kits usually run in the hundreds to low thousands. Fall protection is inexpensive new, so buy used only with dates and tags intact.
Questions buyers ask
- Is used fall protection safe to buy?
- Only with the manufacture date, inspection tag and no visible wear. Anything that has arrested a fall must be retired. When in doubt, buy new; the cost is small next to the liability.
- How do I check a used gas detector?
- Turn it on, run a bump test with known gas, and check the sensor dates in the menu. Sensors typically last two to three years; factor replacements into the price.
- What is a confined space entry kit?
- A tripod, winch and harness system for lowering and retrieving a worker from a manhole or tank, plus a gas detector and often a blower. Every piece needs a rating tag.
- Do I need training to use this equipment?
- Yes. OSHA requires documented training for fall protection, confined space and respirator use. Equipment does not substitute for a program.
