What to look for in used excavators & loaders

  • Hours and service records, and whether the hour meter has been replaced.

  • Pins and bushings at the boom, stick and bucket for play.
  • Hydraulic leaks at cylinders and hoses, and cycle speed under load.
  • Attachments included: buckets, thumb, quick coupler, and whether the coupler is pin grabber or wedge.

What used excavators & loaders sell for

Questions buyers ask

How many hours is a lot for a mini excavator?
Under 2,000 is low, 2,000 to 4,000 is average for a working machine, and above 5,000 you should expect undercarriage and pin work. Service history matters more than the number.
Rubber tracks or steel?
Rubber for lawns, pavement and residential work. Steel for rock, demolition and heavy dirt. Rubber tracks are a wear item; ask when they were last replaced.
How do I inspect a used excavator?
Start it cold and watch for smoke, run every function through its full stroke, dig and lift under load, walk it in a straight line, and check the undercarriage measurements against the maker's wear chart.
Skid steer or compact track loader?
Wheeled skid steers cost less to buy and run and suit pavement and hard ground. Compact track loaders float over mud and soft ground and grade more smoothly, but the tracks and undercarriage cost more to keep up.
Can I haul a mini excavator on my own trailer?
A 3 to 4 ton mini needs a trailer rated around 10,000 lb and a three-quarter or one-ton truck. Anything larger usually means a hired lowboy.
