Used MIG and stick machines typically list from a few hundred to a few thousand. Engine-driven welders usually run from the low to high single-digit thousands, with newer diesel units in the teens.
Questions buyers ask
- Engine drive or shop welder?
- If you weld where there is no power, or need a generator on the truck anyway, buy an engine drive. If you weld in a shop, a plug-in machine gives more arc for the money.
- How do I test a used welder?
- Strike an arc at low and high settings and watch for a stable arc and steady meter readings. On MIG, run wire through the feeder and check the drive rolls. On engine drives, check hours and run the generator side under load.
- Single-phase or three-phase?
- Match the machine to your shop. A three-phase machine will not run on single-phase without a converter, which adds cost.
- Are gas bottles included?
- Only if the seller owns them. Leased bottles belong to the gas supplier and cannot be transferred. Ask before you count them in the price.
