List Equipment

Used electrical equipment here comes from electrical contractors, plants and facilities that are upgrading, closing a site or clearing surplus. Listings include transformers, switchgear, panelboards, breakers, disconnects, transfer switches, VFDs, solar panels and inverters, cable reels and wire pullers. Every listing is local pickup: you inspect it, run it and pay at the seller's yard.

What to look for in used electrical equipment

  • The nameplate: voltage, phase, amperage or kVA, and frequency, matched to your service.
  • Whether it is new surplus, pulled from service, or reconditioned and tested, and any test report that comes with it.
  • Heat, water or rodent damage, burned contacts, and corrosion on bus bars and lugs.
  • On transformers: dry type or oil filled, the oil level, and any PCB label on older units.
  • A UL or ETL listing mark, since your inspector may ask for listed equipment.

Popular brands

Common makes: Eaton, Square D, Siemens, ABB and GE, plus Generac and ASCO on transfer switches.

What used electrical equipment sell for

Used breakers, disconnects and panelboards typically list from the tens of dollars to the low thousands. Dry-type transformers, transfer switches and small switchgear usually run from the low to mid thousands, with large pad-mount transformers and switchgear lineups higher.

Questions buyers ask

Is it safe to buy used electrical equipment?
It can be, when it comes from a known source and is tested before it goes back in service. Have a licensed electrician inspect and test anything that will carry load, and skip gear that shows water or fire damage.
What does reconditioned mean for breakers and switchgear?
Reconditioned gear has been cleaned, inspected, lubricated and tested to its original rating. Ask for the test report. Untested pulls cost less, and the risk is yours.
How do I size a used transformer?
Match the primary and secondary voltage and phase to your service, then size the kVA to the load with headroom. Have a licensed electrician or engineer confirm the sizing before you buy.
Will my inspector accept used electrical equipment?
Many will if it is listed and in good condition, but rules vary by jurisdiction. Call your inspector before buying anything for a permitted job.
